How's this for a BSO?

I reckon he had a rear wheel puncture and just used the nearest wheel to hand - surely no one would ever intentionally do that, would they?

but the brake fits? wouldnt it be out if just a different wheel?

Given it was at a police station, I'm guessing someone nicked a bike that was only locked through the rear wheel, by removing the wheel and leaving it behind. Then they've pinched an unlocked rear from a different bike and swapped it over.

Look again, and look properly... That rear brake is out by, well, about 3 inches, the difference between the radius of the 20" that's been put in, and the 26" that should be in. In fact, the user probably had the rear brakes disconnected anyway to stop them rubbing, and that 20" gives him more room to jam his foot on it to slow down.

I've seen a kid riding a BSO with the reverse, the front wheel replaced with a BMX wheel. It's just whatever you can nick, or find, when you need it.

Actually, it shows a bit more imagination than those people who declare that you can't possibly combine this and that component. Anything is possible, you just have to imagine it!

I reckon he made the bike just so it would be photographed and discussed on websites such as these, sparking a debate on BSOs so the Apollos of this world could get all indignant

Im comfortable with "indignant" cubist. I dont think coppercyclist intended any offence in using the term bso and it can be used inocuously but its use is also guaranteed to bring out all the smug arrogant twits like ianrauk who seem to enjoy nothing better than slaging of bsos , aka other peoples bikes as owned by the majority of cyclists in the country. Imho unnecessary.

Are the majority of the bikes you referring too, well made and safe bicycles? Or are they objects which look like a bicycle but are actually a safety risk?

When I joined these forums, I couldn't work out what BSO meant and I had to ask. The reply I got was almost exactly the above, and hence the picture fits!

I have an old '200 quid' Halfords bike that's about eight years old in my shed, that I call my 'knackered bike'. It's purpose is for riding to and from Tesco, happily leaving it chained up with a cheap lock, because I know that if I come out and find it stolen, I'll simply shrug, go 'oh well' and replace it with a thirty quid eBay special. However, that doesn't mean my old bike is unsafe, so I wouldn't call it a BSO - whereas the bike I pictured certainly seems to fit the term!
