Ok, So i just got given this bike and i would like to know if anything needs upgrading / changing.

Know i don't know alot about bikes so bare with me.

Its a raleigh R100, and has "4130, chromoly lightweight" On the frame, and

Shimano "Flight Deck" On the gear / breaks. Shimano "Soro" on the hubs.

Also had "armadillo technology" on tyres.

Any good?

Any advice.

On another note, got some pedals (Just pedals) with WPD 813 on, where do i get shoes / cleats to go with them.

Without seeing the bike it's impossible to tell if anything needs changing. The bike was originally equiped with good quality reliable parts. Although it probably wont work out cost effective to start upgrading everything it is worth while spending some time / money putting the bike back to a road worthy state.

New bar tape, cables and a good service / clean can often work wonders; but don't go spending loads getting a shop to do this. It will end up costing you more than the bikes worth!

Shimano "Flight Deck" On the gear / breaks. Shimano "Soro" on the hubs.
Shimano Sora. Its good value for money, relatively reliable stuff. Don't even thing about changing this stuff. A set of Tiagra gear levels (next set up) will cost you the best part of £200 by the time you've fitted them. A wheelset with Tiagra hubs probably wont leave you much change from £150.

Also had "armadillo technology" on tyres.
This is Specialized marketing term for a puncture proof layer/system in the tyres. They're one of those 'marmite' tyres you'll either love or hate. They are increadably puncture resistant but the downside is they don't roll as well as many other brands.

I think that these are basic spd pedals - so you need shoes that accept the basic two screw spd cleat -see eBay for both.

The spd-sl system you may see is a three screw triangular cleat system which is more difficult to walk around in but better for riding -your pedals wont accept this system.

The bike, if it's all functioning ok, will be fine.
As Redbike says, Sora is reliable and good value. I had Raleigh Chimera chro-mo framed bike with Sora...it was still running with the original equipment after 6000 miles (just a new chain), so hopefully your's should be fine.

Use it and enjoy it

Thanks guys, you gave me exactly what i was looking for.

Hopefuly if i can get a pump that works it should all be good, apart from the 2 hours of my life i wasted trying to work out how to change the gears up!

Now is when you learn what we already know...you start spending ;)
I have a Zefal frame pump that does the job more than adequately..only cost £5 or so.
Ideally you will want a track pump to really get those tyres pumped up when you're at home. The track pumps not a neccessity, but a good piece of kit to have.
