All the below is just my opinion.

The Sean Connery and Roger Moore JB films were OK.
Since then the story lines have become much the same.
Timothy Dalton was quite a good JB. Pierce Brosnan was too suave, and I haven't seen Daniel Craig's attempt yet!

I think if a good spy 'hero' was wanted, then look no further than John Le Carre's George Smilie (:o) - although his sex appeal was not of 'normal' spies. His books were very good, and (it was along time ago) the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy series was excellent.
There is too little espionage, good acting and a good plot in most spy films; they're either playboys or macho assassins or both.

What Ghost Donkey said.

Also, thinking about it, why on earth was Roger Moore picked to play James Bond? I could have beaten him up, and that's saying something.

He was 59 in his last outing as Bond! and not necessarily a spring chicken in his first one either - 42!

The latest film, with Daniel Craig, was an attempt to move Bond a little more back into reality. The stunts, though death defying were less ludicrous than in most of the previous films (saw Die Another Day on TV the other night - most of what Bond does and survives is simply too fantastic). Furthermore the free-running or parkour scene at the beginning of Casino Royale was actually considered derivative of the recent Bourne films.

Finally in Casino Royale Bond is depicted as being tortured and hurt far more realistically than the laughable 'laser cutting' type scenes in earlier films - so Bond has changed - and perhaps he has been influenced by the less stereotypical Bourne.

Tragically I've just registered to point out that RM was the one man in hollywood that John Wayne wouldn't square up to! And, moving back to the thread, he'd destroy Damon with only the use of his right eyebrow!

His right eyebrow was, indeed, a force of nature....

...but I can raise my right eyebrow AND/OR lower/raise my right eyelid completely independently of the left, therefore weeing on his 'face-moves', ha!*

*I would look a bit silly, though...

Ok, now my boss is looking at me strangely after an outbreak of eyebrow gymnastics!

So that's the end of your posting 'career', then! Back to being a lurker.

Apparently, Fleming's suggestion to play Bond was Patrick McGoohan of the Prisoner fame, but turned it down because he wasn't keen on love scenes (?)
Now he in his prime would have walked over all of them, Bond(s) and Bourne.
