You need one of these

A long flat head screwdriver, (you can wrap the end of it in a cloth if you prefer), and a hammer will get them out, no need to buy/make anything special IME.

Just take your time and drift them out. They might need a little persuasion to get them moving, but once they are they'll come out easily enough.

Then a block of wood can be used to drift them back in.

Both ways have worked for me loads of times

A socket on an extension bar can be slid through the top/bottom cup and gently tapped around the inside to remove the old cups.

Any ideas on installing the fork crown race?
I've seen a vid using a length of plastic pipe and walloping it from above but have wondered if, alternatively, assuming the headtube races are true, if the fork crown race would square itself up by tightening the headset top nut (bearings presumably in place)?.........or would this simply damage the headset?
