Pearl, have two red lights on the back, one of them flashing, and two white lights in the front, one of them flashing. Always have two in case one fails as you won't know, particularly on the back. And get reflective ankle straps as said, as they really stand out when a car's headlights light them up. Get reflective clothing rather than yellow high visibly clothing as it stands out better. Also white clothing at night stands out better than yellow.

Rear, wound around the pannier rack and across the bottom of the mudguard, the gap on the left is why the Fly6 camera/light is mounted.

@Sara_H I like the idea of those lights (for the festive season ^_^), but is there not a risk of them getting caught in the spokes? Have you actually ridden the adorned bike yet?

No, the string is made of metal wire so it actually grips the rack, doesn't flop about like normal plasticy fairy light strings. I've wound it round very tightly and secured the end with sticky tape.
It's not going anywhere!

I start my 12 mile commute at 5am.

I have front hub dynamos on my bikes and 60 Lux B&M lights. I also wear a helmet light. I think the helmet light is important because it is not static, so if a car approached from a side road I can make sure they can see a light.

I wear an Altura, flourescent jacket with reflective strips.

On the rear I have a Smart flashing light which clips onto the back of the jacket and a steadily light on the bike. I normally have an Ortleib rear pannier for my gear and that has huge reflective patches.

I find that is enough to make me seen and it is pitch black where I ride.

I think I have owned a full bike for less than that in the past.
