You will still sweat, should you end up with a mechanical that leaves you out in the cold with a sodden base layer.

Cotton base layers are a no no.

As a utility and leisure cyclist, I can't recall having had the sodden vest experience.

+1 for sports direct.

Bought some Campri base layers and a Karrimor windstopper recently and despite the current cold weather have comfortably managed to commute ok.
Also bought some winter cycling gloves from Tesco and again despite commuting in -10 conditions have been impressed with my purchases.

Low priced and in my opinion worth it all round

Merino wool underwear/layers is the way to go in COLD weather.

Then use whatever on top, as required, such as armwarmers, a Goretex jacket and a good windproof jacket and winter bibs.
