As long as I breathe, I attack.
Good luck with traffic !
I have a 10 mile mostly country lane commute with no lights and maybe 1.5 mile of cycle path ( which slows it down a bit ) and the most i have managed without a tail wind is about 18.5 mph .Then again the bike comes in easily at 20 kg +fully loaded.

Theres one person here who hits a 23mph average pretty frequently, so it can clearly be done.

But as has been said, the more lights and traffic the more of a drag on traffic.

I do 12 hour shifts too: when they prolong into 14 hours my speed goes down to 3mph on the hill back home

I understand your position. It is easy for recreational cyclists and occasional commuters like us to give you advice but it is you who has to cycle and and then work.
But if you do such long shifts, it makes even more important to be careful on the road as you will be tired at the end of the shift.
Perhaps you need to approach cycling to work not as commuting but as a recreational activity.
I can write more but my Turkey is in the oven.

Thanks Hope the Turkey was tasty

As you can see from various posts, there are two views.
One says that you are doing fine and enjoy the ride. I belong to that. I take it further and express my worry that attempt to increase in speed is likely to be at the expense of safety. That I care lot.
The others give you various ways of increasing the speed.
The choice is yours.
I will explain my view further. I am sure most commuters who work in London spend on average at least an hour. But when they go home, they need to find time to do exercise, run gym etc. But in your case, you have already done your exercise.
I like cycling after work as it is a very good way to de stress from work. Some of my friends thought I am mad as I keep a brand new Merc at home and cycle to work. Cycling make me feel free. But if you start to cycle against the clock, you may loose that benefit.
As a motorist, I will say that what is the point of speeding to get few minutes advantage if it is at the expense of safety, to risk of life. Same rule applies here. Remember life always comes in packages.
Choice is yours.
