A Minging Manc...
It's good to read all this stuff because it just confirms my determination to stick with cable operated discs when I finally do make the swop to discs. Anyway, I expect this technology is just about to be replaced by electrically operated brakes, finger light and more powerful than pushing a stick through the spokes on the back wheel.
Don't be a Luddite! There are good Hydraulic disc brakes out there, I have 2 sets of Shimano XT Discs, on my Hybrid commuter and my MTB, and they are faultless.

Calling me a Luddite is a bit harsh. After all, I said I was waiting for electronic brakes. Bike makers often use us to road test their new items rather than doing it themselves: SRAM has just had to recall all of its road disc brakes and has to correct a fault before they can be put back on the market again. Reliability of modern bikes has deteriorated as the price has gone up, and they need to spend a lot more time being fixed than they used to. The chaos in the bottom bracket area is an example. And heaven forbid you should get one of the "new" external BBs wet, as I have heard many stories of people needing to replace the bearings.
