Not strictly relevant but ...
I haven't used any form of degreaser on my current 1000cc motorbike chain although it has so far only managed 6000 miles. I used a form of "mickle" even before I had heard of the learned gentleman. Vigorous rubbing with old tee shirts (may need washing afterwards) followed by a methodical drip drip application of good chain oil at the rivets inside the plates. I carry a small bottle of oil in case I get caught out in inclement weather. For longer journeys (Alpe d'Huez, Selvio, Ventoux etc) I carry a spray can of suitable lubricant; a friend always carries a bottle of used gearbox oil.
Previous chain managed 18000 miles with similar treatment. The one before that also lasted 18000 miles but was regularly degreased. It must be 35 years since I last removed a chain and boiled it in LinkLife. probably coincided with swapping a Mother for a Wife.
