well ive just registered for the deloitte ride, so now have a few days to decide if I want to do it before i give them my money

since I've never ridden further than 50 miles in one go its a bit daunting!

I've registered too, but I have not yet made up my mind.

I am doing this in about the same pace as the Deloitte ride in October using hotels/B&B's and I am leaving the booking till late (except of my long booked Travelodge bargains which I may write off) in case the weather outlook is really foul and I decide to defer it to another time. I reckon on £700 accommodation, £200 transport, £300 food and drink. So £1200, excluding some bits and bobs for my bike like new tires which I would need sooner or later, anyway.
The food will be calorific rather than epicurean, but I will not be stinting on that or on where I stay.

Having said that, the 20s something son of a friend recently did something similar arranged for staff of PWC riding most of the length of Italy - Bari - Turin I think - and it was an experience that will clearly leave him a cycle addict for life.

I'm a bit confused, are you doing the Deloitte event, but staying in hotels, or are you following the route of the Deloitte event independantly?

I see that I said "doing this" rather than "doing LEJOG" - sorry if that confused. All I knowingly share is the start and end and the pace.

A couple I know did the ride self supported on their tandem trike and their total costs for a leisurely trip was a lot less than £1000.

I dont understand all the "you can do it cheaper" comments

Of course you can do it a lot cheaper, but without the backup, medical support broom wagon, luggage transport etc etc etc plus you have to arrange your own route work out all the accomodation logicstics etc

Whichever way anyone wants to do it is fine by me, riding 960 odd miles is still riding 960 odd miles no matter how you do it, its still impressive and something 99.99% of the populations wouldnt/couldnt do

Very good points, and you have helped me make up my mind. Do I want to just turn up and ride my bike, or do I want to do all the work, lug my gear around worry about hotels and food and do the ride? The former is for me I think.

I'd disagree somewhat about your 99.99% comment - actually most adults could do it. Otherwise you're right, it's choice. I gave my budget as an example of someone spending a fair amount on it and eating food other people have cooked and staying in decent/luxury hotels most nights - which lets me travel very light. I could if I wished spend five days doing it, use bivvy bags, eat cold supermarket food, cycle part of the way home and spend £2-300 at most - but I have ridden like that and at nearly 60 I don't wish. If someone wants to spend extra on what Deloitte's offer, then that's fine, the only bit of the Deloitte offering that gets up my nose slightly is medical support which encourages people not to stay within the limits their fitness dictates.

My only other comment is that working out a route and sorting accommodation is pretty easy with what's on the internet now.

really? I think thats eminently sensible if you are supporting 800 or so riders, medical support doesnt have to mean heart attacks, it can mean blisters and aching legs

I agree, I would guess that inspite of advice and warnings from the organisers a lot of folk would turn up for this event with no experience of a ride like this and insufficient training, for some the first couple of hundreds mile might come as bit of shock.

Funny enough, I'm more in the sleep under a hedge brigade and neither been remotely interested in doing LeJoG for the hell of doing LeJoG. But as a massive grp, everything laid on, and a few beers in the evening etc. It's probably quite a laugh. Not that I could afford all that tho....

My finger is hovering over the "enter" button (well it will be when they open entries) so I'd be keen to hear your write up as well.
