How much support can I get for helping the Police?

While I'm not sure the idea was the best, it's intentions are honourable and don't deserve the grief he's been getting in response.

I certainly don't intend to give him grief, if that has been the impression then put it down to piss poor communication on my part.

I see it as just trying to steer the lad away from the possible outcomes. It is good to see passion and a desire for bike advocacy. It just needs to be tempered a bit before the law of unintended consequences bites him where it hurts.

Yep 17.

He sounds very well meaning but naive.

Hey guys, cut Matthew some slack. Try to remember back to when you were 17 and wanted to change the world. A friend warned me not to let my broad mind and narrow waist swap places and that is what I try to do although it gets harder with every passing year.

“Youth should be radical. Youth should demand change in the world. Youth should not accept the old order if the world is to move on. But the old orders should not be moved easily -- certainly not at the mere whim or behest of youth. There must be clash and if youth hasn't enough force or fervor to produce the clash the world grows stale and stagnant and sour in decay.”

So are you suggesting a 17 year old man should go to his local police station and give a presentation to the police on how cyclists should behave on the road?

Yes, I agree with you in some ways but if you want to make those changes it's worth knowing which battles to fight and what clashes to have to produce the most impact and usefulness for what you are trying to achieve. If you pick a fight with the wrong person, it stops you rather than gets things moving. A good old argument and disagreement can be very productive rather than skirting around the issue.

I guess, I'd technically still be called 'youth' under some banners though for me that feels incorrect so I'm genuinely trying to point him in the right direction rather than taking on the mantra of 'I'm older therefore I know better'.

Sometimes though, it is about doing stuff the way you see it and learning from mistakes.
Matthew there are some very passionate cyclists in Wales - try and hook up with them, they could probably do with some passion and energy and you could maybe see what goes on and get an idea of the broader picture. It's probably worth you seeking them out personally as it's your journey and experience.

Good luck with it.

Given the current climate they may just arrest you and give you six months inside for the cheek of it so probably best to leave it.

But often the enthusiasm of youth takes on fights that experience would say avoid, and then the buggers go and win.

Seriously fella. You are better of saying nothing. I used to do what you are doing and ended up ruining my rides. If you are brought of your bike or hit call the Police otherwise swallow it and carry on your way. You never know who is behind the wheel of a car or what they may carry out of it to "talk" to you with.

Well of course I am going to call the police of someone hits me, no matter what type of person they are. (If they are nice and genuinely didnt mean to hit me then I might just not call the police (only if I am not injured and the bike is not damaged)). If someone is agressive towards me then I usually just ride away to prevent anything.

I think you're romanticising youth a bit here.

The above is not always the case- it can be but it depends on several factors.
