How much support can I get for helping the Police?

I was thinking about doing a presentation in my local Police station to help inform officers of cyclists on the roads. This is not because I have had any arguements with police officers, but I just think it would be suitable for them to know a little bit more information about how we feel we should be treated on the roads.

I would go down the lines of showing them a few of my videos of bad drivers who have been agressive to me and inform the officers of how I was not in the wrong. (This is staring to sound like I am making a complaint).
I would then inform them of how cycling needs to be promoted some how in North Wales because as there are a lot of cyclists who go to club rides, I never see any actually out riding locally.

I would then ask them if they had any questions or queries about it.

I am just running this by people on here to see what your view are. If I get too many negative comments then I just wont bother.

How would you feel if someone came to your workplace and in effect told you how to do your job? I don't suppose for one minute that you'd get your foot inside the door.

Well I am not going to be telling them how to do their job, I will be telling them of the dangers of cycling on the roads and why we do certain things, i.e. Road positioning, etc.

Even if they were open minded enoug to let you in, fat chance. Why should they be bothered?

They only respond if Dave & Co's. pressure them to respond. So forget it.

It depends what you're trying to achieve - I don't think the police would appreciate it and it certainly sounds quite patronising as well as being only from your point of view.

If you want more people cycling in Wales - (I only assume this)

then you need to connect with people in the community and people who are would be cyclists/current cyclists. Police aren't the guys who promote cycling (hence no point in you approaching them with it) and how people want to be treated surely would be down to motorists and other road users near you and educating people (this is by no means an easy task)

It might be more worth your while trying to find a local cycle campaigning group and work together with some people- like minded or not - it certainly would get you further in maybe achieving what you allude to above.

I have always found the police to be adequately informed on cycle related issues.

Cycle promotion is not a police matter, and I'm sure they are well aware of poor driving and poor cycling in their area.

I commend your intention but im sure that the police have got better things to do than listen to some herbert on a bike wittering on ad nauseum. You should go into local politics maybe.

How about promoting safe cycling in schools? I have had a company do it in my school where we went on a course and they taught us all sorts of things (road junctions, roundabouts, etc).

Clearly the police arent the people to lecture.

Matthew, if you want to make a difference and get more people into cycling, first thing you need to do is begin by researching organisations in your area as your post sort of highlights your ignorance on the topic.

Cycling is not a one man soap box affair, it's about changing attitudes and getting people to realise that cycling is something they could do too- whatever age they are. The approach you talk about is limited and most likely will not achieve anything or change any minds.

I've worked in this area and one warning, it's hard work and can feel like you're chipping bits off an old block but people continue to do it cause they love it and care about cycling.

What do you wish to achieve by doing this?

The Police are a large collection of people, not all those people do the same thing and only a handful of them have anything to do with policing the roads.
