Are there any jobs up there for people to go to?

canada is half english half french,

although did you mean those englisisms that you can't learn in a language class?

I know what Canada is, I've met Canadians. In fact my only Aunt and Uncle live there. And however much they dislike the idea, to my ears they tend to use American English. I thought the phrasing on the site seemed very British.

I looked for the shop, but for some reason it didn't work for me. Dollars would have clinched it.

Maybe it's ex-pats.

Someone I know had a Canadian girlfriend, who was taken ill and hospitalised on a dig. He spent a week camping in the Kirkwall hospital grounds visiting her at all hours, and when she was well enough to be taking notice, someone asked if he'd been looking after her, and she replied "oh yes, quite well". He was furious, until it was explained that in Canadian, 'quite' means 'very', not 'passably'.

I dispare of students and staff who fail to get into college when they live locally. I have to travel over 30 miles to get there and last winter that meant getting up at 5.30 in the morning to dig the car out, clear the road, cut away the fallen tree, dig out the neighbours' cars and I still got into work in time for classes and before others did!

Blimey, I'm getting visions of you in a Superman costume...

This was last winter's snow at 5.30am.

This is a car properly cleared of the above snow.

I've just offered to teach an additional 4 1/2 hours free at college on Monday morning to ensure my students achieve. That's dedication, and I will be in and ready to teach at 8.30 in the refectory, for lack of a class room, regardless of weather.

Yes, its amazing what you can get in a couple of chest freezers!

After Wednesday, it's amazing how much snow you can pack in recycling boxes, and how big the resulting igloo is....

I want there to be some snow round here. Not too much to stop me getting to work, but enough to stop me taking the lorry out when I get there. That way I'll still get paid for a shift.

Hate driving on roads like this. Frood's gone to work already and I'm supposed to be avoiding exertion until my chest has cleared, so don't want to dig the car out. Not taking public transport, it would take forever, so I took one of my precious remaining days of leave. I'm working during the Christmas period, so my boss didn't begrudge me the day.

Well, I'm in the opposite camp to some of you - sort of. I wanted to get to work. There's some stuff I can do at home (about to do it now) but it's limited. I trudged into work today - I knew it would be shut as I'd had the phone call, but I could let myself in - I needed to collect some stuff and E-mail some files to myself, to continue 'working at home'... I wasn't permitted to stay at work because I was the only one there. H&S regs...

To my mind the schools are at the heart of the problem, and (assuming my best DM-style hat for a change ) I think more of an effort could be made. School teachers should whenever possible live within the catchment areas of their schools, so that they could walk in at a pinch (I walked 2 miles each way - if I can do it at age 60, a 30-year-old teacher can manage). Or the education authority should commission a minibus - with snow tyres - to do the rounds and get the staff in, whatever. Once the teachers are in, the kids can go in. Dammit - children are safe in snow! If supervised. If not - what's with all this tobogganing going on wherever there's a slope? Yep I know kids prefer tobogganing to school, but there has to be a limit! In my time, I was never let off school to go tobogganing...

Sorry, feeling rant-ish. Kids at school means parents at work means economy saved. £1 billion per day (as reported on the news) is not peanuts!
