Peening is a wonderful word but it does take experience to get it right. Start gentle and get progressively more abusive until you achieve the desired result
I tweaked it a bit last night and sanded it down with a bit 1200 grade wet and dry. Although it hasn't disappeared it seems to be riding fine with no visible signs of cracks and the remaining deflection is not affecting the braking. The wheel is totally true and running smoothly so hopefully it will be ok.
