I once fitted 8 patches at one sitting on the tube of a 1970s roadster. I probably wouldn't have but I had taken it for a short ride before renovation as the tyres held air and I came home again and came out half an hour later and the back wheel was on the rim. Hmmm, puncture I thought. Took the tube out, started to pump it up, spotted a hole, patched it and tried to pump up, spotted another hole, patched that, repeat a few more times.
The tyre hadn't punctured at all but a few big sharp flakes of rust that had come from the inside of the rim had punctured the tube in several places. A few years later, the inside of the rim has been wire brushed and painted with new rim tape, the very cracked tyre has been replaced but the tube is still going strong. It is quite possibly original to the bike.
