I keep reading conflicting views about this.

I weigh 13.5st, do my 30 mile commute 4-5 days/week, and do a long walk/ride on a weekend. I eat as little as I dare without going lightheaded/lifeless when I ride, and I still can`t lose any fecking weight:banghead:

I`d like to get to 12st, but can anybody give me any clues how to do this, while cycling without passing out?

Thanks

You are eating too much of the wrong thing. Do you keep an exact no fibs food diary.

Also not forgetting that when you want to lose weight cycling burns off only half the calories that it does at other times.

Sounds counter intuitive, however, try this.

Have a google for the Dukan diet. It has 3 phases which help you lose weight. I'll tell you now, that getting your head and body round however many years of eating a certain way is difficult. Very difficult. But, if you manage to stick with it, especially the attack phase, you should see some results.

It's basically high fat, low carb. Our bodies are shoot hot at using either as potential sources of energy, but when they're eaten together, your body takes preference to burning carbohydrate as a source of energy, as it's easier to metabolise. This means fat is stored. If you reduce, or remove one of these from your diet, you will see a weight loss.

Luckily our bodies are better regulating the burning of carbohydrates than fat. This means if you remove carbohydrates, or reduce them to a point that they're providing no real energy, your body will burn fat. Of course it does burn the fat you provide it with first, through food. But, our bodies aren't all that good at regulating the burning of fat, so will often burn more than needed.

I've tried the diet before, you will lose an alarming amount of weight in the first few weeks.

Surely it's worth a go?

It's not what you eat on the bike - it's what you eat off it.

Alcohol? That's got a ton of hidden calories.

Sneaky treats? They add up as well.

@screenman put above you need to consider a total food diary and it'll probably reveal what's going on.

Don't just cycle.
If you do weights that builds up muscle mass which will burn more calories than fat, even when resting.
Good luck

To aid weight loss, I'd suggest doing more cardio exercise. You probably don't need/want to look like a Mr. Universe contestant, but some/most/all of these exercises should make a big difference:

But if you lack time, motivation, space etc, I'd recommend skipping (IMO the best single and, eventually, most effective cardio exercise) 2 x 5 minutes a day. After a week or two, if you manage to keep to your routine, you'll most certainly notice the difference. You will need to eat and drink sensibly, too, but you know that, right! ;)

There is a limit to weight loss, if you have cut out processed food, junk food and sugary snacks in the main and are eating fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish etc. Then i wouldn't worry about it. The older you get the more you weigh.

you don't tell us your height - if you are 6'4" for example you will find it hard to lose much more weight unless you starve yourself. On the otherhand if you are 5'5" then you are clearly eating something you shouldn't!

The facts of diet and exercise are difficult to swallow. Your body is incredibly fuel-efficient and moderate exercise like what you cite cannot overcome a faulty diet. I want to go as far as saying that exercise alone (in the context of how much we can do and still work and have a life) cannot overcome excessive calorie intake. Further, the faulty-but-persistent food pyramid that focuses on high carb intake is to blame for most obesity. Take a serious look at the principles of HFLC and its derivative, the Ducan diet as suggested by someone else here whom I can't credit now because I can't see him/her from this screen.

Mini hicjack. Not many people skip but I love it. Good ropes are hard to come by though. All rhetorical.

Indeed - it's great exercise, especially if you've got a good surface to jump on, enough space and loud music of your choice.

It really is this easy:

I used to use a Lonsdale leather skipping rope, but now use cheap but good plastic ropes from Argos.
