Oh, by the way, I completely agree with Becs re inhalers . . . . . . following a severe resp infection the smaller airways can be left inflamed and prone to spasm - a little like asthma, inhalers (bronchodilators or steroids) can be prescribed to control the spasm and allow normal breathing patterns, and allow the inflammation to calm down.

I really think you should ask about them Sam. Everyone I know that has had a bad chest infection or flu has ended up with at least a short term course. Your doctor has already said your immune system is hypersensitive so they should treat that, otherwise you could end up with a post viral cough for ages. It's not unusual for serious infections to leave longterm damage in your lungs so I would definitely get pushy +/- a second opinion

Brief update: having been back to the docs I have been for a chest x-ray (results next week) and have been given some antibiotics for "atypical infections". So we'll see how I get on. I'm well effed off with this now.
