It depends on the level of tolerance you want to measure it to and if you are measuring the linear distance from end to end or the distance along its surface. That can range from zero to infinity and so any piece of string is any length you want dependent on how you want to measure it.

As long as the distance between the ends. Unless someone has cut off the ends, then it depends.
