No - it's priceless. I like the 10 mile warm-up. I've never ridden in the Alaskan winter...

I must be cold blooded, I can rarely go very quick for long periods of time in the first 10 miles as I need to warm up! after that 10 mile mark I seem to settle into a rate and can maintain much higher speeds for much longer.

Finally, confirmation of what I've always thought. I have a 10-mile commute to work and it's only at around the eight-mile mark that I really start to get going and it suddenly feels much easier. It's really annoying.

+1 for that. Although I think it's more time related than distance. I get much less pain in my legs for any effort after about 45-50 minutes.

On the other hand you can go for a ride and do what you like and not worry. I often stop for impromptu bird watching. Saturday was for Spitfire and Hurricane spotting, then Dakota spotting 20 mins later. (It was Sunderland Airshow.) Then a tea break 45 minute later when I found a nice spot to pull off the road. If you ask me what I did on Saturday I'll tell you I went for a ride. Not three or four rides!

I agree, although depending on your average speed its almost one and the same thing... it's around 40 mins for me which depending on hills etc is pretty much 10 miles.

Adrian Chiles managed to keep this pace?

There's a short incline leaving Banbury, but then it's downhill all the way.;)

On the road, it was a disciplined ride. The four helpers were leading most of the way to ensure the two 'stars' reached the finish.

They were riding Tarmac Pro supplied by Specialized Concept Stores. I was riding my Dawes Giro 500, 4 kg heavier.

On the 'big ring' most of the time.

For heaven's sake! Any cycling I do between sleeping and sleeping counts as one ride, as far as I'm concerned.

So according to this theory, my 1 hour commute at 05:30 and my 1 hour commute at 16:00 is one ride?

I think what they mean is jimbo that it doesnt matter whether you count them as two rides of 1 hour or just one ride taking 2 hours, you have done the same mileage in a day (albeit classing as a break in between  )
