I work on 1000 feet climbing per 10 miles is hilly, that's the ratio that when crossed makes me feel like I'm on a hilly ride.

To illustrate the aforementioned hilliness classification, here are two local audax profiles:

Spring Into The Dales (2,350 m in 110 km, 21.4 m/km, very hilly)

Its shorter, hillier sister event - Season of Mists (2,550 m in 100 km, 25.5, insanely hilly! :thumbsup:)

I use that as a basis too, although very hilly pans out at close to 2000/10 miles. Additionally the steepness of the hills makes a difference. For me living in County Durham and also riding in the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorks Moors, I reckon on anything less than 10% is a mild hill, 10-20% is steep and anything 25-33% is a very steep hill. My trikes are optimised in gearing so I have one for each type of hilly ride.

You could always do one of these!

Ascent Mont Ventoux from three main roads (Bédoin, Malaucène et Sault) at least;
the climb will be in the same day (but in the order and the date preferred).

You can choose between 3 options:

Cinglé - up and down from three main roads, 136 km and 4443 m difference in level.

Galérien - up and down from three main roads and the Route Forestière (down by one of three paved roads). This road is paved at the start and at the end, but it is deteriorates over 6 km: provide reinforced tires or use a MTB. 187 km and 6052 m difference in level.

Bicinglette - represents twice the Cinglé, six ascents and six descents: Bédoin twice, Malaucène twice and Sault twice, 272 km et 8886 m difference in level.

Not many folks have done the last one!!

Or this

710km across 18 cols through the French Pyrenees with 11000 meters of accent and a time limit of 100 hours( Start at 9:00 Monday and must finish by 13:00 Friday). The ultimate cycle challenge.

Although its only 15m/km so only slightly hilly!

My commute is quite hilly. Every work day, I commute 27km (16.8mi) to work, with about 300m (1000ft) climbing, then from work it's 33.5km (20.8mi) with about 600m (2000ft) climbing.

4 years ago, I couldn't have done the above commute. My commute back then was 8km each way and very flat. Then I moved to a 27km each way but still flat commute. Then I moved to my current location because I wanted more hills. You just have to work up to it over time.
