How far does the tide go out at Southport?

We were in Southport on Sunday, and the tide was out. We walked out to at least twice the length of the pier (which is just over a Km long), maybe a couple of miles, and still weren't anywhere near. Anyone know how far from the seafront it is at low tide? (roughly. I know it'll vary a bit)

I tried googling, and can't find a useful answer. I found a Yahoo question "Why doesn't the tide come in at Southport" to which one person answered "It does come in some days but it's hard to see because it's mostly at night". God there are some thickos out there!

Get an Ordnance Survey map and that will show you how far it goes.

Looking at the maps it's at least 2 1/2 miles from Southport in a north westerly direction or almost but not quite all the way in a northerly direction towards Lytham St Anne's, but if you get the maps you'll get the general idea.

I think that's as fast as a galloping horse.
IIRC, if you're by the water when the tide starts coming in, you really need to walk quickly or run..

With moderate thanks to the less helpful replies....;)

2 and a half miles certainly seems about right, we must have walked a couple of miles and could just see the waves at the edge. We only turned back because we're well aware of the speed it comes in and felt that if it was just on the turn, discretion was the better part of valour.

BTW, I aksed this at the same time over on YACF, and CC beat them to a useful answer by about 3 minutes....

We like Southport. It's a good mix of faded grandeur and true British tat. If we want a day at the seaside over this side of the country we go there. Crosby is a better beach for interest (both the sculptures and odds and ends of rockpool), but there aren't so many opportunities for a cuppa.

I haven't got round to the OS maps for over here yet, must do that.

There is/was an old penny arcade at the end of the pier. At one point it had loads of machines running on old pennies but the next time I went the numbers were reduced. Still worth a visit though.

There's also the upcoming Woodvale rally next weekend.
