I have the Garmin Edge 705, great bit of kit but I'm wondering about a few things... for instance;

- I’ve got it to stop timing (recording) anytime my speed gets <2 miles/hr -- this is so it stops recording at traffic lights or when i carry the bike down stairs and such.. is this the norm or am i cheating and shd have it only pause when i hit 0?
- The calorie counter on things thing.. is it way off not sure how it can be correct as it did not ask me to input my height or weight.. nor does it account for wind (BAD wind in London last few days) – does anyone know how the calorie calc works on the edge?

Thanks all.

Did it ask your weight? If so it will worl on your HRM and take an average from this, so the calorie counter is just a rough guess on these things... that said never user the unit before so I just assume it's like most HRM when it comes to this. My HRM tells me that today, a 2 hour work out in the gym cost me 1680 cals and 140 grms of fat.... it can't be right, it's making it up.

I have the Garmin Edge 705 and have it set up so that it only stops or "pauses" when I'm stationary. Anything else and you're cheating :tongue:.

With regards to calories I think it depends on what you put in your profile in terms of weight, age, gender, bike weight and your HRM. Jimbolee is the expert on this and I think he has had to play with different weights etc to get anything near a more accurate result.
Myself for example - I have set up my profile based on my proper weight etc and today I did just over 50 miles. It says I used 2,628 calories. I find this highly unlikely (even with the wind being horrible today). I ignore that bit as I haven't the time or patience to find out what to put in to get a more accurate reading.

Thanks for this, guys - it solves the problem I had today. I went out for the first time today on my new Spesh Roubaix/Garmin 705 combo :thumbsup: - I met a mate at his office, we went for an hour around Windsor Great Park, back to his office, and then I went home. Because of the two stops at his office, the 705 recorded my average speed as a miserable 13.8mph and 164bpm HR.

I hand-edited the .TCX file in Excel, and came up with a much more respectable 16.7mph and ave HR of 177 - much more like the threshold effort it felt like. And yes, I know there's a lot of room for improvement in that average speed. :tongue:

It was a great ride for me - I started off being really unsure with the SPD-SL pedals (it took two traffic light changes to get clipping in right), and being cack-handed with the new-to-me STI shifters. By the end, I was pretty happy with both. :thumbsup:

Cheers,
Darren

Sometimes my 605 displays 1mph or so, even when I am not moving at lights :biggrin: I was thinking about setting it to stop at <2mph, as per the OP. I shouldn't be penalised because of GPS interferance or whatever reason the unit has for lying aout movement or speed!!
