only fell off 5 times today so must be getting better!! now only if I can turn I may be getting better and have relaxed a bit . ps its like trying to ride all over again lol , but your comments have made it s better learning curve for me especially the one to grip the uss gently ta Neil[QUOTE 1264452"]
The art to riding a two wheeled bent:

i) Start in a very low gear

ii) Starting on any downward slope is an advantage.

iii) Try and relax your arms

iv) Never look at your feet in front of you - always look where you want to go.

v) Practise makes perfect and enjoy.

You seem to have got the knack of starting, but still fall off round corners. Which side do you fall off when doing a left-hand turn?

I have the same 'bent, Neil, but only just spotted this thread.

My advice:

  • sit up. Right up, so that just your butt is on the seat. Makes balance a lot easier (I still do this in tight turns).
  • relax
  • give the bars a good wiggle before you set off.
  • if you find one knee is beginning to ache, pull away in a lower gear.
  • if you find you're tumbling at 2mph, pull away in a higher gear.
  • relax
  • don't steer to turn. Lean to turn, steer to get the wheel back under you.
That said, I'm hopeless on anything other than USS, so am probably not a great point of reference.

But I am relaxed.

I tried to ride a two-wheeler, helped by my mate running behind and holding me steady and without trying not to laugh too much.

I didn't get much further than about 20 feet each time, before crashing to one (and the same) side. After giving up, he later told me that the reason that I always fell, was that he 'forgot' that he had a full load in one of his panniers!

I rode with him and his misses in Australia last winter for a few days and they were planning to ride from Sydney to Perth, but I haven't had any contact since January. It seems like a great way of travelling!

Only recumbent I've ever tried was a flevobike greenmachine. Actually found it much easier than I thought it would be (perhaps the geometry makes it so) and after a little help to set off at first was happlily riding round a dutch car park in 10 minutes. Just wish I could actually afford one of them.

Wow. I've been riding 'bents for 2 and half years now, and have never managed to get any of mine around a dutch car park. Then again, I've not taken them to Holland, so I guess that's fair enough. ;)

Certainly something in the geometry though. My SMGTe is far easier to learn on than the Furai. Could also be the sheer weight of the thing.

Andy.

Being on holiday in Holland at the time helped enormously with the car park
It was a recumbents only shop, spoke for quite a bit to the owner and he had some nice trikes and HPV as well.

SLOWLY getting better at starting off thank you , do find it a bit daunting as Im still getting used to uss , Glad I decided to give bent riding a go as its given me something to occupy me since suffering an accident and having 2 disc implants and pins put in my lower back, ps hope I dont fall off to hard as there will be bolts and screws everywhere lol cheers neil

Give up, Neil. They're all impossible to ride. I'll take it off your hands for a fiver.

;)

(Always fancied a SMGTE).
