How do you drop a training partner?

Have had my training partner for around 8-9 years. She was great when we first hooked up, she'd leave me for dead and not even be out of breath. We'd run miles, I'd be in bits, and she'd look fresh as a daisy.

As I put the effort in, it got to the stage where I could keep up and we'd both get tired.

Then she started getting reluctant to go out in bad weather.

Then she started stopping on our runs, pretending she';d seen something interesting but I knew it was cos really she was getting tired and couldn't hack the pace.

Now she's making a token effort on the longer runs but really she is only interested in the shorter distances, and even then wants to do them at a slowler pace than I want to.

I've started going out by myself but it doesn't feel right.

I don't know how to handle it.

Not only would it feel wrong to go out and find a new partner, but my wife says I wouldn't be allowed a new dog anyway.

It's a damn good job it's not a fella, on a bike, and you were whooping them...cos all sorts of abuse would start - no mercy on club/training mates on the bike !!!!!

That's quite a touching story Stig-OT-Dump, hopefully there's many more years in your dog yet, give her/him a rest.
There's almost nothing sadder than losing a loved animal.

You should stick with her and just adjust the type of 'training' you do with her. You may find that there is lots to look and sniff at during brief walks and long sits where the views are nice. You would both appreciate the time spent during these sessions to develop your bond further and in new directions.

I've tried running loops so she can cut the corners. Now I'm resolved to taking her out every other session so she gets the easy days.

The bad thing is that she sulks when I leave her behind. Strange how she never gets excited when I'm wearing baggies and shimano shoes, but as soon as there are running shoes and shorts she goes mad as I come down the stairs.

Won't be long till I start driving to the beach on weekends so that I get slowed by the sand and she can beat me again...
