How do we feel about balloon tyred city bikes?

I've a yen for something by velorbis, and may be able to get a Churchill, not everyone's cup of chai I admit, at a bit of a discount.

A sit-up-and-beg town bike is about the only style of mount I don't have in the shed at home. Or do I go back to plan a and try again to get a Pedersen?

I would like a bike with a full chainguard and have been checking eBay for any local examples that look interesting (sellers don't generally post them!)

Since I sold my Brompton the only bike I've got that I can jump on without cycling shoes is Ms. P's old Trek Navigator, and while I'm happy to ride it there's not much seatpost in the frame when I'm using it. I've started doing a bit of running and it's handy to have a bike to ride to get past the boring/ traffic-y bits.

7 speed? Enough for medium hills, also you'll be getting lots of admiring glances.
Only downside is the parking: you would want to take this beauty to town, for shopping or meeting friends, I would be worried to let her out of my sight.

The only benefit I can see is that you might not come off 2nd best in a red light jumping competition. I prefer it to the Pedersen which looks like it should be ridden whilst wearing a pith helmet and plus fours but hey, it's not me who has the hankering, so the only thing I can add is....balloon tyres are in, plus fours are out.

Its a bit like these people who buy 4x4 land Rovers but never leave the City.

Why?

Whats the purpose?
Kerbs, pot holes, tarmac ramps. All of which have them in abundance on the cycling infrastructure of, and around, cph. My Brompton (with Kojaks) can be quite punishing here and the single speed I used last summer was occasionally teeth rattling with 27c's on.

But is it a bit like people who drive Chelsea Tractors? I'd have thought it is more like someone who drives around town in a taxi. It is an out and out urban bike.

I have three pairs of cycling plus two's. No idea why you'd wear plus fours, far too much wind resistance. ;)

Around here it is a very unexceptional machine. Plus I tote a Kryptonite lock.
