Yours may differ slightly but the process is the same

old racer, I'm assuming square taper?
remove bolt and any washer from the cranks
wind the centre section of the puller back,
lubricate the threads of the outer section and wind it in to the cranks
make sure it goes right in
now screw the middle bit of the "puller" in

"puller" is a bit confusing - it's more of a "pusher"

it pulls the crank arm off by pushing it off the spindle.

note that some pullers have a small diameter central part that fits into the bolt holt in the spindle - insert a bolt into the spindle - note the one you removed but one that has a head size slarger than the hole but smaller than the square hole in the crank arm - the bolt in effect covers the hole in the spindle allowing the central part to push against it.

I have one like this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bike-Crank-Extractor-Remover-Puller/dp/B007MVTGUK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_2

How on earth do these work?!

Been trying to take the cranks off an old racer, need help!

I'm probably wrong, but I can imagine extreme confusion/exasperation ensuing if the racer is old enough to have a non-standard chainset.
Somewhere in my toolbox lurks an old extractor for Zeus cranks (if memory serves correctly, which is doubtful - it may have been early Stronglight), not used for 25 years or more, and totally incompatible with anything else. As always, Sheldon has useful advice.

Hi everyone, thanks for the help so far. No luck, however.

These are some photos of the crank and what we're dealing with.

Any further thoughts or tips?

The nut needs to be removed. Some crank pullers come with a suitable socket built in, (follows link in OP), as yours seems to. The shiny end, use it to remove the nut. Then turn round and screw the black end in to the thread in crank. MAKE SURE THE SHINY BIT ISN'T HITTING THE BOLT (yet). The black end needs to be screwed in good and tight, with as many threads as possible engaged. Use a spanner on the flats. Then use a spanner on the flats of the shiny bit, screwing it in so it pushes against the crank bolt. Brace against the crank arm and keep screwing. Two outcomes are possible: The crank slides off (hooray!) or the thread strips in the crank (boo!)

I think you might need to expand your tool collection a little. Bit worried about the adjustable spanner and hammer!

Yeh I know haha :-D
Am hopefully setting a bit of money aside to invest in a repair stand and some quality tools!

Just had a call from the LBS and they've been successful! Thanks everyone though!

Might be worth getting them to fit a new BB compatible with your tools! As an aside, LIDL will have a half-decent toolset next Thursday.
Maybe not Parktools quality, but very good value. Doesn't look like the ~£30 repair stand is available this time around, though.
