i started cycling again about March after a couple of years off for medical reasons, now nearly 3 stone lighter ive just achieved my best time for my 50 mile route. I'm just wondering how i compare to the more experienced cyclists amongst you regarding speed, times etc. my results are as follows-
51.5 miles
2hr 58 min
17.4 average speed
141 average heart rate
i realise everybody is different, and im still carrying too much weight (just dipped below 15 stone at 6ft tall) and compared to some fellow cyclists i see when out who have all the gear and are built like sticks i feel i still have a couple more stones to go lose.

Sounds pretty darn good to me!!!! An average speed of 17.4mph over 50 miles puts you into semi pro land!!!
Can i ask what your using to record your stats?

It's a decent speed, generally speaking, but it means very little without knowing some details of the route, i.e. how many traffic lights etc and it also depends a lot on the course profile. Is this a moving average or a "normal" average? It also depends on the context in which you compare. If it was hilly (2000-3500ft total elevation gain over 50 mile) then that is probably about intermediate level club run speed (i.e. the sort of speed a club ride that is aimed at a middle ground between new joiners and the faster club rides, faster rides will be 20+mph average) on the flat it is less impressive and is about 1mph over the speed of a ride aimed at newcomers. HOWEVER, if you don't compare it to club riding where there is a drafting benefit, generally speaking, it is faster than the majority of other general leisure cyclist I have come across.

Hi, yep broughton astley it is! Your stats are pretty similar to mine, the only reason I was asking the question is I mostly ride on my own so it's pretty hard to have a comparison with anyone. I mostly ride out through ullesthorpe, gilmorton, north killworth etc. If you see an overweight 45 yr old bloke riding a blue giant scr2 on your travels give me a shout!!!!

Well I am 45 in about 3 weeks time and also ride solo. Have been cycling for about 18 months now and tend to ride on a Saturday morning. I have a Trek Pilot (silver).
Will give you a shout if I see you out and about. If you fell like riding with a partner one week then just let me know as our speed/distance are the same we should push eachother along nicely.
