it's not just debris and potholes that are problems with cycling close to the gutter - you're also less visible to drivers waiting to pull out of side roads and have no 'wiggle room' to the left if a car overtakes too closely

I always reckon that a good rule of thumb is to ride at least one (large) pace away from the kerb (in case a pedestrian steps out in front of you) or at least one open car door away from the kerb (in case someone opens a car door as you're passing their parked car).
As previously mentioned, Cyclecraft has some good advice on the subject.

1 yard out.

I like to ride in the curbside tyre tracks. 1/ because they are usually drier, and 2/ the cars sweep the sharp objects away.

As a rule of thumb, if another cyclist takes his life in his hands and tries passing you on the curbside and succeeds, you are in the right position.:tongue:
