Thank you Brian, I hope it does get easier.

Just got back with my 12 year old who I lost on the ride and was waiting for me back home. A bit fed up as the app I have does not seem to be recording the ride properly and I only clocked up 2.9 m @ 6.9mph so a tad faster (although ds pointed out that there was a lot of downhill but was impressed that I made it up the hill fom our local supermarket )

May have to try a different app, any suggestions.
Post a link to the ride, maybe it's the way you've set up your account. My Strava is set up so it doesn't show the start and end of the ride. (don't want everyone know where I live/work

welcome Kadz....relative newbie myself....
just repeating what most have said, dont worry about what distance anyone else is doing or how fast your going..just enjoy your rides and if you feel the motivation to push your limits then go for it..if you want to just ride to your local for a cheeky drink then thats cool too...

Another overweight beginner here. I say beginner, I've started cycling again about 4 years ago but I still feel like a beginner. I am rubbish at hills. I would be overtaken by a heavily laden milk float. But I keep at it and it gets easier.

I use SportsTracker on my iPhone (which was either free or around £1.99), simple and easy to use.

Keep pedalling.

I'm a little bit jealous that you have a pashley. They are beautiful bikes.
I started on a heavy step through and progressed to a sleeker, lighter hybrid once I'd lost a few pounds and got a bit fitter.
My first time out for a ride was on Mr6's mtb and I only made it about 2 1/2 miles before I thought I'd best get home before I wore myself out. Today I did a 28 mile round trip (stopped in the middle for a while though) but the hills still get me. Every time!

Try Endomondo, its probably the next most popular so easy to get help with and theres a CC group on there I believe.

Strava will hide from the map a certain distance around your home ( sensibly), it's in your settings. Just make sure the phone has a gps signal when you set off and it does get the full ride.

Riding long distances isn't the be all and end anyway. Despite my sig line I much prefer a nice ride to a long one

That looks like a nice bike, I hope you enjoy riding it. If you enjoy it then you will improve just by riding it more :bicycle:

As for riding up hills, there's nothing wrong with bottom gear. If you want to improve on a hill then ride as far as you can before you have to stop and walk (if you can ride all your hills in 1st gear then try 2nd). Then remember a mark - something like a lamp post or drain cover - and try and ride past it next time. Slowly your legs will adapt and you will be able to ride up hills you don't think are possible now.

With the saddle, do you like the one on your other bike? If so try swapping them over for a bit. The more you ride the less sore each ride will be though. I'm not sure if you break the saddle in or the saddle breaks your bum in but either way it gets more comfortable eventually.

thanks mate, thats a really good post, started about 3 weeks ago , have done a couple of 10 milers, i'm also running as i'm thinking about duathlon next summer, your advice about hills is really accurate as i attempted a hill near my house and bombed out badly half way up, but i think the point your making is to make a mental note of the progress and try and beat it next time, rather than trying to tackle the hill and being disappointed if you dont't make it.

Don't worry about the big mileage stuff, some of the best rides i have done have been little ones although i do like the challenge of bi rides aswell.
As a lot of good peeps have already said,we all started somewhere and just built up the distances as we got fitter which will happen to you, enjoy it,i certainly do and the gang on here are great and very helpful

There's a punch line in there waiting to get out.

Just a thought. Have you tried the Sky rides? They are free and they have rides for pretty much every level, including some ladies only ones that travel along at about 6mph.

Just look for rides in your area. There are none near me, I would have to travel to Ipswich but there do look some fun ones there. I am sure that there would be ladies and slower rides somewhere close to you.
When hubby & I were starting cycling from scratch (after a 12 year layoff) we looked into Sky rides but as were were in the back of beyond, there wasn't anything close enough but we would have loved to have gone on one.
