Our university club is looking at hosting a crit around campus, but we are only at the starting stage of talking about it. Obviously we will have to see if it is possible with our university student union before anything happens, but I'd be interested to know if anyone has any experience in organizing races, and if there are any guides out there to assist us.

We are looking at a 3/4th races, an E123 race, and potentially some womens only races and kids races. Obviously this is ambitious, so we'll see - with discounted entry to students from any university.

Some kind of "anyone can enter" race would also be great - for people that have a bike and just want to have a go

Fantastic... I guess our main problem will be lack of initial funding to get things going...but sponsorship shouldn't be too much of a deal.

Well seeing as cycling is on the crest of a wave at the moment I would think sponsors would like to be involved.

Have you got barriers etc. ? When BC come to look at the proposed course they are going to tell you you need a lot of barriers ^_^

Oh and make sure you get the council involved at an early stage

Your biggest single cost will be barriers - depending on the BC risk asessment you might get away with only barriering certain areas - or if you are really unlucky, you will have to agree to barrier the whole circuit before a race permit is issued. Uni campuses are usually busy, public spaces, so I wouldn't be too hopeful on that score.

Speak to the guys at Loughborough Uni Cycling club. They organise a crit round their campus and should have some experience of the key issues.

One of the reasons for getting the county council involved they'll have some plus loads of other stuff that will be handy. Lancahsire looks like one of the better ones too.

We seem to be talking about Lancashire for some reason? I have no experience of Lancs council, but in principle I wouldn't expect councils to maintain their own barrier stocks and provide them for less than market rate. The other issue is that although the Uni campus is effectively a public space, it is probably on private property, so the council may have no interest anyway.

Local sports council, Sport England or tourism authorities might be a good place to look for funds...

Cheers for the heads up guys.... Some great info here. I know there are a bunch of barriers somewhere on campus as they get used for various other things. Next step is to guage the interest of the student union, as it may interfere with bus routes

We get our barriers FOC from the county councils highway dept. the council are only to willing to help in any way they can Ive found. Events like this are good PR for them.

...but here's a clue, last time I looked Lancaster Uni was in Lancashire.

I'm sure that's true - but the OP never mentioned a location and the first mention of Lancs seems to be from you?
