I always move out to a point where the horse can see me and i've already said hello, the horse usually knows i'm there before the rider. Most of them are ok with the trike around here but any that do spook soon calm down when i stop and stand up.
Red freaked out first time he saw my trike, but now he comes trotting over to the fence when i arrive at the yard(especially when i've got the trailer on with sacks of feed for him). They're all unpredictable and even the best behaved horse can have a bad day and they can all be more easily spooked on a windy day.

Came across a horse the other day. Rider was very complimentary and chatty. Not a single harsh word.

OK, it was the wife of someone in our group. So that may have had a bearing on the greeting.

When approaching from behind I talk to the horse, not the rider.
I've yet to encounter a horse listening to an ipod or texting on a mobile, but have spooked riders who were doing this.

Theres a racing stables near me.Once passed about 20 horses going the other way on a narrow lane ,not one seemed at all bothered, most of the jockeys said hello or a bit of banter at me sweating up the hill.

Came upon a single one recently beig led by a young girl.It didnt look happy so I stopped and stood near the hedge, it wouldnt pass me so I had to push the bike past ,did I get a thank you? Not one word.

It's always worth taking the time to speak to the rider as usually it's a nice piece of posh totty
