Charged both sets of batteries up,and swapped them into opposite lights to normal.
Result is the Duracells are the problem -
On full power lasted 2 hours on the dot,
Other light lasted 2 1/2 hours

Happy now it's the batteries and not the light anyway.

The 7dayshop.com V8 charger is very good, I have had one for about 12 months. It's best fetures are that it can charge individual batteries, which is useful for the Cree type LED lamps, as they usually use 3 x AAA cells. The other useful feature is that you can push the discharge button and the cells are fully discharged before being automatically re-charged.

It can be used on AA and AAA type cells only, but as most cycle lights use these size batteries, it is ideal.

I recommend these chargers over all the other types that I have ever used.

Just had a look at the 7day shop site and ordered one of these

x8 battery Charger

Charges each battery individually rather then in pairs/fours etc

Cheers for the heads up Foss.

Well, after all this wait I have had an email from 7day shop saying the above charger is now out of stock and they don't plan to make anymore..

if you need to charge/recharge/organise that many batteries every week, why not just get a hub dynamo setup? for me it would be a no brainer

sometimes the mah value of the battery is quoted as 'peak' and other times as 'average'

the higher the mah the less reliable they tend to be, especially as they get older. Higher mah battery also tend to unbalance more easily especially if you are using a slow charger.

so, higher mah isn't neceassily better and doesn't always mean longer run times (although on paper it should)

and.... chargers that charge 2 or 4 batteries together should be illegal - always buy charger that does each battery seperately.

and... I hope you are not using NiCADs!!!

I know a lot about batteries from my days racing RC cars

I've found thisone to be pretty good. Charges individually. Discharge function. LCD screen will tell you if you have a "dud". Comes with both mains and 12V DC (car) adapters.

I had a similar problem with Duracell batteries in that light. They only lasted ~30mins on full.
The batteries seemed fine in everything else though.

The light obviously draws a very high current. Some batteries cope with this better than others!

I find high capacity NiMh seem to lose their charge sooner compared with lower capacity cells. I compared 2500mAh with 2100mAh cells and was getting more reliable service ( holding charge over a week) from the 2100mAh cells each time.
