Did they have metallic back then ? Probably not I would guess.
Mostly they used flamboyant on bikes but seeing as this has a metallic base I see no reason that metallic paint was not available. You have me thinking now will investigate further and report back.

Metallic paint also known as polychromatic first used on a car as early as 1933. I have just checked my frame stash and have a 1948 Humber Clubman that is metallic light blue and a 1950 Lenton Sports that is polychromatic green both in original paint. So now happy that gunmetal grey is period correct as Hobbs advertising says any colour finish available.
