Although I'm not getting out as much as I like my rides are getting longer (60 miles is my maximum so far) but at around 20 miles in I start to get pain in both my hips

I'm think my seat could go a little higher do you think this would help

The pain is nothing major but certainly noticeable only on the last 10 miles of my 60 miler did they really start to hurt

Are you stretching your hip flexors ?
HipFlexorStretch.jpg

I used to suffer with this as well and the above stretch helped, with out seeing yo on the bike its hard to say and i am no expert but a google found an interesting post saying that someone had a fit with KOPS and that gave them hip pain but pushing the saddle back a bit relieved it.I certainly run maybe 1 cm behind KOPS but do not take my word as gospel as i am just an everyday cyclist and i have found what works for me .

To be honest I don't stretch before or after something I really should start doing

Pre ride stretches are supposed to be a no no now as they have been shown to tire the muscles quicker , post ride i do the normal calf, quad and hamstring stretches with a hip flexor when i think about it .
I also do a stretch session for all major areas including arms /back etc a couple of times a week , a manual job means i need it !

I might be a bit OCD with stretching but in my youth a did martial arts and could do splits on chairs so i like to try and keep a bit of flexibility

Cheers mate I'll definitely stretch from now on, I should know better as I go to spin classes and the instructor can't stress enough how important stretching is

Fast and careful!
The nail has been hit on the head, stretching !,ensure you warm up slowly for rides, and cool down at the end, then stretch your lower body muscle groups,
I do loaded stretches, every day ,to ensure maximum flexibility and muscle length ,but I would advise a visit to a good sports Physio/ biomechanics expert for this,if I lapse for a while on the stretching ,I get hip and knee pain from my quads if they get tight

I am doing circuit training quite a bit at present (not cycling , I know) there are 3 fitness instructors who take it in turns.
A couple of them run a 10-15 minute warm up with cardio and stretches and plenty of stretches to warm down.
The last one is minimal warm up and stretches at the end.
The morning after the night before my lower body can tell you who we've had.

When you're riding do you go at it from the start, or ease yourself into it over a couple of miles?

Cheers guys, I do start off quite hard but nothing ridiculas, I'll have a word with my spin class instructor and ask him for some specific stretches, he's a mad keen cyclist himself

If the stretches don't resolve it then go and see a proper physio so they can check your range of movement. Hip impingement is surprisingly common but often not diagnosed. I had one and got it sorted with a fairly simple operation. My hip problem was causing hip pain and repeated groin strains, all thankfully now sorted.
