Hi,

I am fairly new to cycling so I am looking for advice please.

I would like to go clipless on my Giant Rapid bike but I am unsure what shoes and pedals to go for so I am looking for some suggestions ?

Is there any shoes out there that I would be able to also walk in easily if required as I have heard some are not that easy to walk around in.

Pedals that take MTB style cleats are generally considered easier to walk in.

These Shimano 520's are very good, well priced and come with cleats.

You'll need shoes that will take the 2 bolt cleat, often referred to as SPD (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) shoes.

Try a pair of Shimano M324 pedals. Double sided,so use with normal footwear one side and cleats the other.
For footwear, the world is your oyster. Cycling shoes that take the 2 hole cleat system range from £20-£200. I have the £20 versions from sportsdirect and they work just fine on my hybrid.

+1 for the m530 - better support and far easier to clip in to than the m520 due to the platform

currently cheap at CRC too - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=67249

+1 for these from me as well. Can be had on ebay new with cleats for around the £23 mark. Find them very easy to clip in and out.

Shoes , i went for a cheapo £20 pair of muddy fox from sports direct coz as i was just starting back cycling and hadnt used clip ins and not sure how i would get on with them didnt want to spend too much. They have lasted a year now and seen out winter but probably looking to upgrade soon.

Also look at A520 pedal - so called touring pedals - offer road bike (SPD SL) type support but with MTB (SPD) fittings / shoes - notvthey are single suided so not quite as easy as m520 to clip into but offer more platform / support

The A530 s are very convienient, but the bearings are a bit rubbish something you won't get with premium pedals. As for shoes you will get dozens of recommendations. Generally speaking you will get a better made shoe with carbon sole rather than fibreglass in the budget offerings. If you go for Shimano shoes remember to get one size bigger than your regular size. I have some budget Shimano shoes which are fine but you can't walk in them. I also have some Shimano MTB shoes which have recessed cleats but are hellish heavy. Some like the Lidl shoes but don't expect them to last long.

What is your opinion on the m530 bearings?

Thanks for the advice so far I was looking at the A530'S but think I may be put off now by the bearings issue.

If there are any other pedals you think I should consider then let me know at the moment it is between M520 and M530 OR A520

All those use the same cartridge bearing which is more than adequate for the purpose. Should they ever need a fettle then they are simple enough to service, adjust repair or rebuild.

One thing to note is they aren't packed with that much grease (IMO) at the factory, but it's an easy and quick job to remedy - That's all Shimano pedals in my experience not the just the lower end ones  Here's how
