I find the drops good for the back, and the belly takes care of itself. Admittedly, I don't have much of a beer belly due to early onset of gout and restrictions of that sort. Keep pressure at near recommended max. Cross bikes may be a great idea, though.

Thanks once again for all the info. I really want a road bike, I think I would rather wait and keep going out on my MTB.

Sorry guys, I meant I don't want a tricross. I want a road bike. If I was to big for a road bike I would rather keep going with a MTB until I was light enough for a road bike.

Even better, you can make a challenge out of it and treat youself with something better and non-compromising when you reach the magic number. Good luck!

You gotta do what you gotta do.. Hope you get to your target weight, and stay there.. at least until you get a new target. More time will give you more opportunity to see and experience other bikes. Then you can get what you really want. If you find what you like, you may keep it for thirty years or so. Of course, in 30 years Google will have come out with a bike that drives itself around for you(For your own safety, mind), or some software by which you can experience a bike ride through some glasses you wear. Or bikes may be exactly the same.

Also remember that you can change details such as spoke counts and hubs when you buy a road bike, you just have to get the shop to change the wheels in the standard package to something different. This may cost you a bit more, though. I did this when I bought my Specialized Roubaix Expert SL4 road bike in November, swapping the DT Swiss wheels (which have a noisier freewheel) for a nice quiet Shimano hub + Mavic rims combination.

This is probably a strange question but I'm new to the world of cycling and rather big. I have been riding a MTB with road tyres on. I just want to upgrade to something faster. Weight is a big issue for me as I'm probably the wrong side of 20st (to scared to get on scales). I have been riding for a little while now. My first ride was 3 miles and I have progressed up to 45 miles now on Sunday morning rides. I go in shops looking a road bikes and just wonder if they would collapse under my weight? Any advice would be appreciated (other than loss some weight you fat git!!! I am trying) sorry this is a bit long winded
Great progress and inspiring for others too no doubt that are just starting out,as for the road bike..................c'mon admit it........................................the lure of lycra is calling:whistle:
I started off on a mountain bike and did'nt think i would ever convert to road,2 years later and my mtb has only been out 3 or 4 times in 18 months and i now own a road bike, beware it becomes even more addictive:thumbsup:

Thanks for the advice. I would just like to start on an entry level road bike. Maybe a specialised allez or specteur. I can afford it now, I just didn't want to walk into a bike shop and be laughed at. I'm really enjoying the exercise and feel a lot better for it already.

Shop owners never laugh at people prepared to give them money, well not unless you're wearing a fake nose or something.

Seriously though - 45 miles? I'd say you've got yourself to a place that the vast majority of bike owners never reach! Wow and well done!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Triban 3. £300 for a decent bike then when you're happy with your weightloss invest in carbon bike.

Then you'll nearly have the correct number of bikes, which is three plus one you have your eye on
