I guess the problem really does lie with the way the pump head locks onto the valve... managed to get to 90 today although it was hard work with the whole thing bending and twisting like crazy(whilst blowing back out of course). Guess I'll be stumping up for replacement sooner than later:sad:

Thanks for all the advice!

I have to replace the little rubber grommet/seal in the head of my Silca track pump every couple of years, as I get the same problem as Chugsy. It wears over time as the threads on the valve gradually remove tiny bits of rubber from the seal, thus allowing air to escape when you're a-pumpin', making proper high pressures nigh impossible.

So, unscrew anything that looks unscrewable, and have a shufty for a little rubber ring type thing. Most pumps in my experience have these and are pennies to replace. Your local bike shop will most likely have a small drawer full of the things, like mine does.

Eek! Someone's just shot Vicky P.

I can reccomend a cheap track pump I got from Lidl (not sure if they still do them), made by Beto and cost not much more than a fiver, i don't expect it will last forever but it does the job.

Wot brockers said.

It's easy to source parts for the Silca track pump. They're not as all-singin' whoopy-doopy as some. but the availability of those few crucial spares means they go on forever - or near enough.
