Ive also owned a Claud Butler Urban 300.

For my first commuting bike it was ok. I replaced the tyres for Mitchelin City slick tyres, which made a huge difference. The front suspension forks seemed well built at first, but after a few hundred miles, they needed a good service. The groupset (gears and brakes) were poor and i constantly had problems with weak brakes (pro-max) and shifting up and down gears.

For £300 its not a bad bike, but i would deffinately try testing a few other bikes first.

+1 don't buy from shops that won't allow test rides.

My guess is you don't need suspension. Suspension only works for big hits ... won't eliminate "road buzz."

Thank for all the help.

Got a trail ride on the revolution trailfinder on tuesday, they have a suspension and non suspension version so I can have a a try of both. Unfortunatly local bike shop won't let me have a try of the CB urban 300. Shame really

That is crazy - +1 to take your business elsewhere (and any future business)!

Missed the trail ride due to bad weather, found another LBS and they recomend a Giant CRS 4.0/3.0 FS. They will let me have a test ride if the weather permits!

Unless the tow path is extremely rough then you don't need suspension. A wider tyre will absorb more small bumps / vibration than even the best suspension fork.

Im not an experienced cyclist but can tell you that my CX10S Halfords hybrid bike with no suspension manages fine on paths and fields etc as well as roads. Have to be a bit carefull on really rough bits and sticking up tree roots but it gets me where I want to go.
