Help pedals just got delivered my new bike last night went 4 ride this morning the problem is that the pedals the shop has fitted and the cheap plastic toe straps when the pedals are horasontal the end of the toe strap catches the front wheel when i only turn it a wee bit almost tipped me off in the car park out side my flat . The straps were not on the bike when i test rode it at the shop . So i went back in and called the shop explained the problem they say nothing really they can do . The check of it spent over £650 there yesterday its a trek 1.2 09 model 56 frame im 6ft1 any advice what i should do pleas thanks i know this place is helpful .

I'm trying to figure out how that could happen but looking at this picture, it's all too obvious!

Can they be shortened? Or removed completely? They look way too long to hold the foot correctly anyway.

The only solution without moving / removing is to learn which way to hold your feet when you are turning. I wouldn't want to be stuck trying to sort pedals and bars in an emergency, though.

I have a similar problem on my bike. It has a short wheel base, which means that in theory my foot could touch the pedals whilst turning at low speeds..

But you should mostly be leaning to turn at high speeds, so that shouldn't be an issue due to limited steering angle, and at low speeds i wouldn't pedal.

So i only have an issue if 'attempting' to track stand.

This is mostly due to experience that i don't have an issue with it.

But your LBS is pretty much right (just a shame about there attitude towards it), there isn't much they can do about the issue at hand, you could try changing your pedals, as i presume it's just the overhang of the straps cage that is causing the issue.

Hi Lotus

glad you got a bike sortedso quickly - sorry to hear they've got problems with the pedals

The options are:
Take it back to the shop and ask for standard pedals to be fitted without toeclips
Purchase a set of better pedals and shoes but this is a completely different topic altogether

Sorry to hear ur LBS reaction of 'not my problem'

Hope you get it sorted!

It is quite common even with clipless pedals in my look keos my toes would catch the front wheel as well. Its just something you get used to.

If you want to carry on using toeclips, you can get a shorter version that are just moulded cups, without straps, they might not come so far forward.

I've also heard that this is a common problem, and not catching a toe is one of the skills a rider learns. All my bikes have a longer wheel based though, being more touring types.

Most people these days seem to prefer clipless anyway, although I'm not a convert myself.
