I have bought a fuji sportif 1.1 LE recently and wanted to finish up the build( just missing derailleurs shifters and brakes). Now the original comes with 105 5800 which is great and I can get them really. Now the bike is disc ready so it has the traditional mounts for disc brakes.

Here is the small technical issue, I wasnt thinking of getting a disc brake for it and was going to try and use the 5800 caliper brakes. my issue is distance. Now both brake mount holes are roughly 7cm from the rim of a wheel (i had a spare wheel and checked it.

The question is will the 5800 brakes be suitable? or better go for disc brakes? Mind you the brakes i looked at would be mechanical (funds are somehow limited) and i spotted the avid bb7 road disc ones.

I inserted the pics in case they would help. I got some answers from some people but everyone points to the disc option

If the distance is 70mm, no way will short drop callipers fit, even medium drop like BR650s only have 57mm drop - looks like the frame os disc-only, and the mountings are for mudguards?

I am not a very experienced mechanic but just learning. I have recently removed and reinstalled calipers in my bike.
I can not see why you can not fit calipers to reach the rim.
It may sound stupid but what size tyres are you using? 700 x 25?

It may be possible to get some long drop calipers to reach the rims - but you run the risk of diminished brake power due to the longer arms flexing. If you have disc ready wheels, BB7's are the way to go.

The frame seems to be able to use up to 35c and the 35c types i have fit fine with about a 15mm clearance from the frame tube (cyclocross tyres)

Not sure if you got this sorted or i got this right but i have so long reach brakes you can have for nothing. Maybe you might want to try these.
All the best.

What matters is not the width of the tyre but the diameter or more precisely the radius of the wheel. If you use a larger wheel with a bigger diameter it may reach the callipers. But it depends on whether rest of the frame let you do that.
I will be interested to know whether it actually does.

I have now checked with my LBS took the bike in and he turned his nose on the brake calipers. Discs seem much more appropriate for the frame itself. I am now looking into some avid bb7's since avid bb5's have such a bad rep. He said one could place calipers but would be touch and go with braking due to wheel rim distance too.
