A few more:
  • What's the tube joining the 2 seat stays called? i.e. the bit onto which some types of rear brake are bolted?
  • What's the usual name for the sheaths around the brake or gear cables? Is it "cable outer", or just "cable sheath"?

Ah, thanks for that :smile: . It's a weird hobby I have, but it helps me sound like I know what the hell I'm talking about when I talk to bike mechanics, and aids in online shopping searches, too.

My rear mech' cable goes down the seat stay. Just before the exposed cable reaches the last stop there is a tiny little ruber sheath about 1.5" long with an even tinier sheath sticking slightly out of it. The cable passes through this.

What's it called and what's it for?

It's a tongued ferrule. Basically the thin rubber tubing forms a seal against water ingress. The thicker part simply allows the ferrule to be mated with the outer cable.
