As I move more towards doing my own bike maintenance, I've had trouble finding some obscure bike parts, because I don't know what they're called .

For example, because I'm planning to replace my brake cables sometime not too far off, I wanted to get some of those rubber rings (sometimes cylinders) that you run the rear brake cable through when this cable runs over the top of the top tube, the idea being to stop the cable rubbing on the top tube and scratching it. Any idea what these things are actually called?

Another one is the small cylinder that is on each brifter, and out of which the gear cable emerges. What are these called?

If you have names for some of these obscure bike parts, I'd appreciate your input!

Regards,

--- Victor.

Don't know the other one! Edit - do you mean the cable ferrule? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/transfil-gear-cable-ferrules-bag-of-100/

The small rubber protectors are called Donuts.
Or so I was told many moons ago.

Don't know what a brifter is.

Frame protection sleeves, (or something similar), like THESE.

I got mine from Decathlon but they don't seem to be coming up at the moment.

[EDIT] the donuts protect the top tube from an exposed cable running along it. The sleeves protect the frame at points where an outer cable rubs against the frame

Here's my guess for the 'cylinder' you describe.

If it's Shimano I suspect it's part number Y6BD98110, which is item number 5 on the attached tech document.

Of course I haven't a clue what shifters you're using so just amend this to suit your particular ones if this is indeed the part you mean.

Don't know what a brifter is.
It's short for brake + shifter, e.g. STI shifters, where the brake and gear cables are controlled by the same pair of levers on each side. Where the gear cable runs out the side of each of my brifters (on the Vivente World Randonneur tourer I use for commuting), there appears to be a small metal cylinder, but I don't know if it's actually connected to anything under the brake hood.

No, I'm referring to these (thanks for the tip on the term "donuts", people): http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-cable-donuts-pack-of-10/
Make sure you get the right sort of donut, I didn't realise there were so many options

I can only think that you mean cable adjusters like these (google Jagwire Cable adjuster)

Cheers. First time I have heard of Brifters. But makes sense.
And I should have known seeing as my bikes have Ultegra STI's.

Yes, I think that shifter diagram you posted is the one I'm using, or one very similar, and the part you mentioned, the "cable hook unit", is the one I'm referring to.
