I have a problem with my Barrosa Monaco. From time to time I get a 'clunking' noise. It usualy becomes evident as the road levels out after climbing a hill and to be it seems to be coming from the back of the bike, however, when my friend was riding alongside, he said he thought it could be the bottom bracket. I checked the bearings in both the bracket and the rear wheel and found nothing amiss and there seems to be no problem with the chainset etc. I took the bike to my LBS and he changed the bottom bracket bearings but the clunking persists. My cycling is on a strict budget (I am retired) so I don't want to go to the expence of a new wheel which may or may not be the problem.

The noise is loud enough to attract attention when I pass pedestrians, If I stop pedaling, the noise stops. there is no play in the bearings on the wheel nor are they overtightened. The wheel runs easily and silently when I spin it.

Any idea's would be welcome.

sometimes a bit of grease on the chain-ring mounting bolts can get rid of clunking. one of my bikes is prone to this.

it's best to work your way around all the nuts/bolts/fastenings, removing, cleaning, greasing and refitting them one at a time and see if the clunking goes away.

Thanks for that Jig sore. the chain ring is riveted together but I will check anyway and take your advice on the rest and let you know what happens.

I've been chasing creaks on my hybrid recently. I though I had a problem with the drivechain, but actually regreasing my the clamp between the seatpost and the saddle rails seemed to stop the noise.

Aluminium bikes seem to creak anywhere but where the cause is sometimes. To check it's not the bars, try pedalling with as little weight on them as you can get away with. To check seatpost/saddle try riding along for a bit out of the saddle. Other than that it can just be a case of working round all the moving parts with grease.
