Hey guys, so i am a total noob at cycling just got into cycling on my road bike and today i got myself a pair of cycling shoes from Sports Direct. Yes, i know they are mountain bike shoes but i was told it really doesn't matter... Here is the link:

Now, i am not sure which cleats/ pedals i need to match this shoe. I have had a look on ebay and these seem to be good but not sure if they will fit my shoe.

Here is the ebay link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-P...sure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item23248c9225

Any help is appreciated, THANKS

They'll be fine

They will be fine together but I would recommend a larger dual-use pedal if you're new to clipless cycling and intend using them in Winter. Shimano do full sized pedals with the cleat mechanism in the centre so you can get started from a standing position without being clipped in while you're getting used to using cleats. You will be fine with this combination though. Gez

You need shimano m520 pedals. They are available in many retailers online for around £20 with the cleats. Very easy to use as they are double sided and great for beginners. I had these to start with and now have them on my commute bike
Why does the OP "need" M520 pedals? Will the world end if someone buys a different model?

No experience of the M505 model, but I would suggest the OP looks for M520s which are a known quantity/quality to members of this forum - and almost universally acknowledged as a good deal. Often to be found at £19 - £20.

The Shimano are okay, good value for money, many many people use them, because they are cheap and not made of cheese.

That said they are nothing special either.

.... 'it really doesn't matter' - as long as you didn't want SPD/SL, LOOK or any other 3 bolt road system.
Anyway ... I think the Shimano A520s, or the Wellgo road SPD pedals always look the part on a road bike.

I prefer the M530, that doesn't weigh much more (certainly not enough to make any difference in this section of the forum), can be had for a similar price if you look around, and has a small cage around the mechanism.

This lets you unclip and move your feet while still being able to pedal, and makes it more than bearable to do shortish trips on your bike (e.g. nipping over to a mates house and not wanting to get all togged up or take a pair of non-cycling shoes with you.

I've used both, but own the M530. I suggest it's worth looking at a few different SPD pedals to see what you like the look of before splashing the cash.

Just ordered the M520s due to most of you recommending them!

Just have the tension nice and loose (both sides) to start with. And have a bit of practice before going out in traffic - lean against a wall in the house say

I have m520s on my pave

Have fun

Hi Chris,

I was just wondering what you thought about these shoes? I'm looking at going clipless myself, but don't want to spend too much on shoes yet. I've heard the Lidl and Aldi offerings are pretty good, but no good hanging on for those to come up as they don't do my size, whereas Sports Direct do. ;-)

Thanks in advance!
