Save your ink, soon somebody will be along to tell you your head would not have hit the ground if you did not have a helmet on.

I am with you on this one, as I feel a helmet may have saved my head from further injury more than once.

Or the opposite.

RoSPA clearly advises reference the THudguard:

.. should make a valuable contribution to risk reduction in a similar way to cycle helmets...

... and of course there is the testimony from Holly Willoughby how it would have prevented injury to her daughter.

So equally weighted evidence for Thudguards.... who will be buying one for their kids?

Not me, my youngest is 25 and can make up his own mind.

Helmets are a personal choice. If they are for you, then the more you pay, the lighter, more ventilated they become up to a certain point.
Find out your head size, then watch out for last years models at discounted prices.

I would definitely recommend trying them on rather than blindly buying on the internet. I went to a LBS with £100 to burn on a helmet and walked out with a £30 specialized Align as it was the one that fitted my odd shaped head the best !

And that's exactly the way to do it...

Mod Message: This thread is about what kind of helmet a beginner should buy. Diversions into how to choose, how to make it fit etc. are fine.

But please avoid any further 'debate' about whether or not helmets are useful. There are already plenty of threads on that in the Helmet and Headphone debate forum (under Campaigning and Public Policy).

Is there any point of buying a expensive bike helmet which cost from £70 upwards. I have a cheap Bell helmet from Halfords is there any difference?

Just make sure it fits well and has adjustable straps under the chin, and possibly at the back. The last thing you want is a poorly fitting helmet that doesn't stay in position. After that £30 or £100 will make no difference

Would it not be disingenuous to not at least make the point that a helmet is unnecesserry? A beginner asking such a question may not be aware of the facts, and might be a bit cross having shelled out a not unsubstantial amount of cash on an unnecessary item recommended in this forum to then discover that we all kept schtum cos it wasn't in the debates section.

You need to get one that looks nice! I've just purchases two giro helmets because I couldn't decide between two colours lol one white and one red on the way with a new pair of oakley's too ;) I currently use a limar 777 that is a VERY light helmet and dosent seem to cover much of my head but it has saved me from nasty bumps a few times
