I think you could get away with either but personally, a helmet, an umbrella, a hat.

An helmet is probably technically correct but in modern day English usage, a helmet is probably normal.

Personally, I prefer to call them a "pointless waste of time" (polite version)

OMG!!

I can't believe it!!

Another thread about indefinite articles!

My friend Carlos wouldn't even be here now if he hadn't used the correct indefinite article after a nasty fall while descending.

The third option you offer is so wrong, I don't even know where to start.

How anyone can disagree with me I just do not know!

Can't you hear how loudly I'm hitting these keys?

From Wikipedia:

The form "an" is always prescribed before words beginning with a silent h, such as "honorable", "heir", "hour", and, in American English, "herb". Some British dialects (for example,Cockney) silence all initial h's (h-dropping) and so employ "an" all the time: e.g., "an 'elmet".

It depends for me. Sometimes I'm wearing an 'elmet, sometimes I'm wearing a helmet.

It depends how lazy/drunk I am at the time
