The Exposure Joystick looks good, but it's a bit on the pricey side.
Any other options sub £100 ? Ideally with a red on the back as well.

Cheers.

I really like my cateye EL410 (circa £25) its a helmet light but I tend to use it more on the bars, although I do use it on the helmet sometimes (its simple to fit) its not got a red light, however.

I can tie my cateye el-120 through the central vents in the helmet. Won't pretend it's the brightest thing ever but it does secure on my helmet.

Why not get some sort of torch? The Fenix LD10 is small and light, is immensely bright and together with a mount is a third of the cost of the Joystick.

I like it. If I combined it with B+M Topfire, it would still only be £62, compared to £156 for the exposure with the rear LED.

Any ideas on how best to helmet mount it? Cable ties?

Dealextreme also sell lots of cheapo torches that put out more lumens than the Fenix - factor in a charger and lithium rechargables (also at DX) you could be sorted for as little as 20-25 quid.

RSP ASTERI 3W RECHARGEABLE LED BIKE LIGHT +ASTRUM REAR

£50 on ebay, I saw the rear Astrum tonight and was very impressed, they're £13 but that Asteri is 200 lumens, Li-on with 5 odd hours burn time, aluminium body, plenty bright for a head light I'd say

What purpose helmet lights for road use?

I can see uses in off road riding (low branches, etc), but I see many road commuters and can't understand benefits as they're usually point way higher than driver's line of sight.

The benefits to me are that I can direct the light where I'm looking, so for going round a corner you don't have that problem of cycling to the side of your bar light beam; and that I can shine it straight into the car of a person i think is about to out out which gets me noticed.

+x'dozen, to add to the list, Ive found it gets noticed earlier on undulating back roads and hence drivers tend to dip their lights earlier; perhaps because its higher up than a handlebar mounted light.

What mcshroom said + illuminating the nearside kerb on bends + most importantly fast downhills on unlit roads esp. if I've not gone that way for a bit.. I tend to run a narrow beam on the bars and a wider beam on my head.
