I use a bar-end mirror cheapish one by Zefal I think £10 from lbs, really useful as you can keep a constant check on what's going on behind without having to keep looking over your shoulder all the time.
Got mine knocked bandy by a too close overtake a few weeks back so was without one for a few days and really missed it.OK they might not be trendy or cool, but who cares if it makes riding easier/safer:becool:

FWIW, I use a bar-end mirror on my drops with the mirror dropping down from the bar, rather than at right angles to same. I find that this looks more aero etc and also improved my field of view as no matter what position I adopt on the bars/hoods I never obscure the mirror with my arms etc. If you can adjust yours in the same way it may prevent this sort of incident.

I have to say, I find a mirror very useful.

As I suggested above, don't use those; use these:

You are better off just looking over your shoulder, this also has the added advantage of being a means of communication with anyone how is behind you...

It is far safer.

It's not either/or, why do some people never seem to get the hang of this? A mirror is a useful extra, not a replacement for looking over your shoulder....

+1 Arch,I find them really useful when you're wanting to turn right, wait for a gap then quick look over shoulder and maneuvre, makes life a lot easier than constantly looking back.
