I'd like to start heart rate zone training in order to lose more fat. Few questions:

- is this only reasonably possible on a turbo? ( I have too many hills near me and struggle to get a lowish heart rate)

- id rather focus on hit if that works better ( again, I don't have a turbo and there's too many hills to get a good run near me )

- are the hills I ride on essentially hit?

Re the op, you don't need a turbo it is just a more controllable variable when you do train.
Hills are not necessarily hit. You can use them for that, many people do hill reps, but you can also spin easily (relatively) up a hill.

Personally, I think it's very hard (not impossible) to do anything related to HR on the road. You can't control when the road goes up or down and how easy or hard you can go. Throw in traffic, junctions and wind and it makes it difficult to control.
If riding up hills makes you work hard and you can control your calorie intake then you should be able to lose the fat - it's what I used to do.

I can do a 30 +mile ride around here and keep the HR within about 8bpm of where I want to be, we do not have any traffic lights on my routes, depending on time of day I can sometimes go 5 to 10 miles without seeing a car.

Might be shot down in flames here, but surely the way to lose weight on a bike is to do at least a couple of long rides each week at a steady pace - doesn't the body use its fat reserves as the main energy source during such extended aerobic endurance?

Coming soon: Bonking on a hill near you!
I've lost 2 stone this year, by a bit of healthy eating and a lot of riding. I half thought about what I was doing with the riding in certain heart rate zones, but now I just get out and ride.

I've cut out alcohol, severely fatty foods and added more fruit to my diet. I just feel healthier in myself.

I had the weight on me to lose though really...

Well this is what I wanted really. I should have included the question in my original post...should I even bother with HR zones?

At the moment I go out and ride and just measure my fitness based off times doing set loops. The quicker I am the fitter I am right?

If you are overweight, then eat healthy, cut back on booze, ride your bike regularly and you will lose weight and become fitter.
It really is as simple as that.
I lost near 4 stone that way.
