What Rob says is spot-on. I've been cycling for 3 and a half years - leisure and commuting - and haven't really had the need for a HRM. But I started riding TTs this year, and have recently embarked on a structured training programme for the winter, so I've got myself a HRM and it's great for that purpose.

My advice to any beginner is ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike. If you start competing and taking it seriously, get a HRM.

Bought a monitor for jogging. Used it once. Using common sense and listening to my body works better.

I got the cheapy one from Aldi used it a couple of times, just to see what my max hr was and what it was running at when cycling at an "average" speed, more really just so I knew my own numbers.........I haven't used it since. I may put it on and check again after a couple of months...I may not. I was happy to pay the £10 or £12 or whatever it cost, incidentally I didn't use it on my 100 mile sportive I completed recently.
