What Rob says is spot-on. I've been cycling for 3 and a half years - leisure and commuting - and haven't really had the need for a HRM. But I started riding TTs this year, and have recently embarked on a structured training programme for the winter, so I've got myself a HRM and it's great for that purpose.
My advice to any beginner is ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike. If you start competing and taking it seriously, get a HRM.
